What Is a Crypto Whale? The Wallets Big Enough to Move a Market

A crypto whale is someone who holds so much of one coin that buying or selling can move its price by themselves. Everyone else trades into a market; a whale trades against it. The word stuck because the size difference is easy to picture: most buyers are small fish, and a whale entering the same water changes the level.
How big does a wallet have to be to count as a whale?
There is no official line. For bitcoin, people usually start calling an address a whale at around 1,000 BTC. On a small coin the bar is far lower, because it takes much less money to shift a market that few people trade. The rule of thumb is relative, not absolute: a whale is anyone whose position is large compared with the coin's normal daily trading, which is why market cap tells you more than the number of coins alone.
Why does everyone watch whale wallets?
Because they can. Every transaction on Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana is public, so anyone can open a block explorer, paste in an address and see exactly what it holds and when it last moved. Automated accounts post large transfers within seconds of them happening. The most watched wallets of all are the earliest bitcoin addresses, holding roughly 1.1 million coins believed to belong to Bitcoin's creator, which have never been touched.
Does a whale moving coins actually mean anything?
Often it means nothing. The biggest wallets on any chain belong to exchanges such as Binance and Coinbase, holding coins for millions of customers at once, so a huge transfer is usually housekeeping between their own wallets rather than a person deciding anything. Even a genuine whale sending coins to an exchange might be selling, might be borrowing against them, or might be moving to a new custodian. Reading intent into a transfer is guesswork dressed up as analysis.
The practical use of whale-watching is narrow but real: before buying a small coin, check whether a handful of wallets hold most of the supply. If ten addresses control half of it, any one of them can leave and take the price with them. Treat alerts that tell you a whale is buying as entertainment, and never as a reason to buy something you have not looked into yourself.
