Volume Analysis Trading: OBV, VWAP and Volume Profile

Volume analysis trading means using how much was traded, not just at what price, to judge what a move is worth. Three tools do most of the work, and each answers a different question. OBV asks which way the volume is flowing. VWAP asks what the average participant paid. Volume profile asks at which prices the trading happened. Put plainly: direction, fairness, location.
OBV - which way is the volume leaning?
On-balance volume, invented by Joe Granville in the 1960s, is almost childishly simple. Start at zero. If today closes higher than yesterday, add the whole day's volume. If it closes lower, subtract it. That running total is the OBV line. The number itself is meaningless; only its direction counts. It is a tally of whether busy days have been up days or down days - like keeping score of which team had the louder crowd, rather than the final result.
VWAP and volume profile - the price side
VWAP weights every price in a session by the volume traded at it, giving one line for what the day's money really paid. Volume profile goes further and shows the whole distribution: a sideways histogram where the longest bar, the point of control, marks the busiest price. On a Bitcoin chart, VWAP tells you whether today's buyers are ahead; the profile tells you which price levels the market has spent real money defending over the last month.
When they disagree
Disagreement is the useful part. Price grinding to a new high while OBV flattens means the up days are getting quieter - the move is running on less fuel than it looks. Price holding above VWAP while the volume profile shows almost nothing traded up here means it is floating over thin air and can fall back fast. Neither is a signal to act on by itself. Both are reasons to ask a second question before you do.
A practical limit worth knowing: all three read volume from whichever exchange your chart is drawing, and crypto volume is split across dozens of them. Numbers from a small venue are noise. Pick one major market, add one volume tool at a time, and learn what normal looks like there before stacking the next. The VWAP guide and the volume profile and AVWAP guide go deeper on each.
