RSI Divergence Trading Strategy: How to Spot It, Trade It and Avoid False Signals

An RSI divergence trading strategy has three parts: spotting a signal that is actually there, waiting for price to agree with it, and accepting that most of them fail. The divergence itself is never the trade. It is a reason to start watching a level you already care about, and the entry comes from what price does next - not from the moment the two lines disagree.

How to spot a valid one

Pick a timeframe and stay on it; a daily chart of Bitcoin or Ethereum produces far fewer signals than a 15-minute one, and far better ones. Find two clear swing points on price - two highs or two lows that stand out without squinting. Draw the matching line between the same two points on the RSI. If the two lines slope in opposite directions, you have a divergence. If you had to hunt for the swing points, you do not.

Where to enter and where the stop goes

Wait for confirmation. On a bullish divergence that usually means the candle that closes back above the recent low, or the RSI line crossing back above 30 or 50. The stop sits just beyond the swing that made the signal - below the low for a bullish setup, above the high for a bearish one - because if price takes out that point, the divergence you drew no longer exists. Size the position from the distance to that stop, not from how convincing the chart looks.

How to avoid the false signals

Most divergences fail in strong trends, which is exactly when they are easiest to find. Three filters cut the worst of them: take only divergences that point back toward the bigger trend rather than against it, require the signal to land at a level that already mattered - an old support, a round number - and ignore the fourth divergence in a row, because repeated ones mean the trend is eating them. It is a smoke alarm, not a fire: it goes off for burnt toast far more often than for anything serious, and that does not make it useless.

Worth doing first: scroll back on one chart and log twenty divergences on paper with the outcome of each, before risking anything. If the signal does not earn its place in your own log, no article can make it work. Next: the four types and how to label them and why price keeps rising when RSI is overbought.
