Why Price Keeps Rising Even Though RSI Is Overbought, and What to Do

If price keeps rising even though RSI is overbought, nothing is broken. RSI above 70 measures strength, not a ceiling. The indicator compares recent gains with recent losses over the last 14 bars, so in a strong uptrend it can stay pinned above 70 for weeks while price makes new highs - Bitcoin's daily RSI has done exactly that during every large advance of the past decade. Overbought describes momentum. It is not an instruction to sell.

What RSI actually measures

Take the last 14 candles, average the up moves, average the down moves, and express one against the other on a scale of 0 to 100. If almost everything was up, the line sits in the 70s or 80s. Think of it as a speedometer: it tells you how fast you are travelling, not where the road ends. A car doing 80 is not about to stop simply because the needle is high.

Why 70 is not a ceiling

Experienced chart readers treat the whole range as moving with the trend. In an established uptrend RSI tends to live roughly between 40 and 90, using the 40-50 zone as a floor on pullbacks; in a downtrend it works between about 10 and 60, with 50-60 capping the rallies. So a reading of 75 inside a strong trend is ordinary, while the same 75 after months of flat chop means something else entirely. And remember which way the arrow points: RSI is calculated from price, so the line can only come back under 70 after price stops rising. Selling the number means betting against the thing the number is made of.

What to watch instead

Three things are more useful than the threshold. Treat a sticky RSI above 70 as confirmation of the trend you are already in rather than a reason to fight it. Watch whether pullbacks keep holding that 40-50 zone, because losing it is the earliest hint the character of the move has changed. And check a higher timeframe - an overbought four-hour reading inside a calm weekly uptrend is noise.

Worth doing once, by hand: open any chart app, add RSI, scroll back through a big trend in Bitcoin or Ethereum and count the days it spent above 70. The exercise cures threshold trading faster than any rule. Next: what overbought and oversold actually mean and why price reverses right after your stop.
