Market Structure Shift (MSS): How to Identify and Trade Reversals

A market structure shift, usually shortened to MSS, is the first break on a chart that goes against the trend. In an uptrend it means price has closed below the last higher low. In a downtrend it means price has closed above the last lower high. That is the whole difference between this and a break of structure: a break of structure says the trend continues, a market structure shift says it may be finished.

How do you spot a market structure shift?

Mark the swing points first - the peaks and troughs the chart has been stepping through. In an Ethereum uptrend the sequence runs higher high, higher low, higher high, higher low. The shift is the candle that closes below the most recent higher low. That single close breaks the sequence. Most traders will not count it unless the move away is fast and decisive, one or two long candles rather than a slow sag, because a limp break is far more often noise than news.

Is MSS the same as a change of character?

In practice, almost. Different schools use MSS, CHoCH and sometimes BOS for the same event, which is how three traders can look at one Solana chart and label it three ways. The acronym is not what matters. The question behind all of them is the same: has the sequence of highs and lows changed? Pick one label, use it every time, and your own chart history stays readable a month later.

Trading it without getting run over

An MSS is a warning, not an entry. The usual approach is to wait for price to come back toward the level that broke and watch whether it now rejects - if that old floor really has become a ceiling, the next leg down tends to start there. The level just beyond it is where the idea is wrong, so the risk is measured before any money moves. And shifts fail all the time: price cuts through a higher low, everyone announces the top, and the uptrend resumes two days later.

Take one chart you already watch, mark every point in the past two months where the pattern of highs and lows broke, and note what happened over the next twenty candles. That number is your honest hit rate, not the one in a video. Background in what market structure is, and the continuation case in the break of structure guide.
