How to Draw Support and Resistance Levels Correctly

Most charts go wrong at the drawing stage, not the thinking stage. To draw support and resistance levels correctly, mark zones rather than hairline-thin lines, keep the number of them small, and never move a level later to make a trade you already took look better. The chart is a record of where the market reacted, not a drawing of where you would like it to go.

Why zones instead of lines?

Because the market never turns at exactly the same price twice. If Bitcoin bounced at $93,800 once and $94,400 the next time, the truth is a band a few hundred dollars wide, not a single number. Drawing it as a zone keeps you honest: you stop expecting a precise bounce, and you stop being surprised when price dips slightly through and recovers. On a chart tool like TradingView the rectangle tool does this better than the horizontal line.

Bodies or wicks?

Both, which is what the zone is for. A candle body shows where most of the trading happened; the wick shows the extreme that was rejected in seconds. Draw the zone from the body edge to the wick tip and you have captured the whole area of disagreement. Pick one habit and keep it across every chart - the point is that today's level is drawn the same way as last month's, so you can compare them.

How many levels should be on your chart?

Few. Three to five per coin is plenty, and if the chart looks like graph paper you have stopped reading the market and started decorating. Every extra line gives you an excuse to take a trade, which is exactly the problem. Delete anything you cannot defend in one sentence.

One rule protects you from the rest: draw your zones at the weekend, before you have a position, and leave them alone. A level you move on Wednesday because price went the wrong way is no longer a level, it is a wish. Next: how to find the levels and how to use them in a trade.
