Crypto Volume Analysis: What It Is and How to Use It

Crypto volume analysis is the habit of checking how much was traded before deciding what a price move means. Volume is simply the amount of a coin that changed hands in a given period - the bars along the bottom of almost every chart. A big move on heavy volume means a lot of people took part. The same move on thin volume means very few did, and it is far easier to undo.

Think of it as the crowd, not the score

Price is the final score of a match. Volume is the size of the crowd that turned up. A team winning 1-0 in front of a packed stadium and a team winning 1-0 on an empty training pitch have the same score and very different meaning. When Bitcoin breaks a level that held for months and the volume bars barely twitch, that is the empty-pitch version, and it often gets handed back.

Why crypto volume is messier than it looks

In stocks, one exchange reports one official number. Crypto has no such thing. Each venue counts only its own trades, so Bitcoin volume on one exchange is not the market's volume - and aggregator sites add them together using their own rules. Three more things are worth knowing before you trust a figure:

  • Spot and derivatives are different pools. Perpetual futures often trade several times the volume of the underlying spot market. Charts rarely say which one you are looking at.
  • Some reported volume is not real. Small exchanges have been caught inflating figures to look busier than they are. Stick to the large, well-known venues.
  • On-chain volume is a different thing entirely. Coins moving between wallets on Ethereum are not trades, and many are the same owner shuffling funds.

How to actually use it

Keep it comparative. Volume means almost nothing in isolation and a lot against its own recent average: today's bar versus the last twenty. Look for breakouts carried by volume well above normal, quiet pullbacks inside a trend, and exhaustion spikes where enormous volume arrives and price refuses to go further.

Pick one major market and watch its volume bars daily for a month before adding any indicator on top. Once normal is familiar, the tools in OBV, VWAP and volume profile will mean something, and this guide shows where to switch them on.
