Bridge Transaction Stuck? How to Fix Cross-Chain Transfer Delays
Most stuck bridge transfers are not stuck at all - they are waiting, and the wait is built into the design. A bridge does not send your coins anywhere. It locks them on the chain you left and releases a matching amount on the chain you are going to, and the two halves are separate events with a gap between them. Moving money to Arbitrum usually takes ten to fifteen minutes. Moving it back to Ethereum takes about seven days.
Why going back takes so long
Arbitrum and Optimism let anyone challenge a withdrawal before it is paid out, and the challenge window is seven days. Think of it as a cheque that clears slowly on purpose, so a forged one can be caught. Nothing is wrong with your transfer during that week, and no support agent can shorten it. At the end you go back to the bridge site and press Claim - a second transaction, on Ethereum, that you pay gas for. Plenty of "lost" funds are simply unclaimed.
The four real causes of a delay
- The challenge window. Seven days for Arbitrum and Optimism withdrawals. Deposits in the other direction are minutes.
- An unclaimed step. The money is waiting for you to press Claim, sometimes twice, as on Optimism.
- No gas on the destination. The tokens arrived, but you have no ETH there to move them, so the wallet looks empty until you add a little.
- Wrong network in the wallet. Funds are fine; MetaMask is simply pointed at the chain you left.
What to check, in order
Find your transaction on the bridge's own status page - the Arbitrum and Optimism bridges both have one - and read what step it is on. Then check the destination address on that chain's explorer, such as Arbiscan. If the explorer shows the funds and your wallet does not, add the network and the token manually. Only if the bridge page shows a genuine failure is there anything to report.
And the warning that matters most: nobody legitimate will DM you about a stuck bridge transfer. Anyone offering to "unlock" it, asking for your seed phrase or sending you to a recovery site is stealing from you. Use the bridge's own site, typed in by hand.
