Bitcoin Transaction Fees Explained: What You Are Actually Paying For

A bitcoin transaction fee is not a charge set by a company. It is a bid. You offer an amount to whichever miner writes your payment into the next block of Bitcoin's shared record, and miners fill each block with the offers that pay best. Nobody publishes a price list. You and everyone else sending bitcoin at that moment decide the going rate between you.
Why does the same transfer cost different amounts?
Picture a small ferry that leaves every ten minutes with a fixed number of parking spaces. On a quiet morning almost anyone gets aboard for the minimum. When a crowd turns up, drivers start offering more to be waved on first, and whoever offers least waits for a later crossing. A Bitcoin block is that ferry: it sails roughly every ten minutes and has room for about one million virtual bytes, however many people want in. Demand changes hour by hour, so the fare does too.
What decides your fee
Two things, and only two. The first is the rate you choose, counted in satoshis per virtual byte — the sat/vB rate. The second is how big your transaction is, which has nothing to do with how much money you are sending. A wallet that has to gather twenty small scraps of old change into one payment builds a far larger transaction than one spending a single chunk, and pays more at the same rate. That is why emptying a wallet full of tiny deposits can cost surprisingly much.
What the fee is not
It does not go to Bitcoin, to a foundation, or to the exchange you bought on. It goes to a miner. It is also separate from what an exchange such as Coinbase or Kraken charges to withdraw — that is the company's own price, often a flat amount whatever the network is doing. A self-custody wallet like Ledger Live or Electrum simply shows you the network rate and lets you change it.
Before sending anything that is not urgent, glance at the mempool queue and pick a lower rate if it is short. Quiet nights and weekends are cheap. And never sweep a wallet full of dust without checking the fee it will build first.
