Bitcoin Spot ETF vs Futures ETF: What Is the Difference?

A spot bitcoin ETF holds real bitcoin. A futures bitcoin ETF holds contracts that settle against bitcoin's price on a future date, and never touches a coin. Both are bought in an ordinary brokerage account and both rise and fall with bitcoin, but only the spot version tracks it closely over long stretches - the futures version carries a cost the spot one does not.

What each fund actually owns

A spot fund such as BlackRock's IBIT or Fidelity's FBTC buys bitcoin and leaves it with a custodian. Its share price follows bitcoin minus the yearly fee, which for the big spot funds sits around 0.20% to 0.25%. A futures fund such as ProShares' BITO buys cash-settled bitcoin futures on the CME - contracts that expire. When one is about to expire the fund sells it and buys next month's, over and over. That monthly swap is called rolling.

Why rolling costs money

Next month's contract usually costs a little more than the one expiring, because people pay for the convenience of locking in a price ahead of time. That gap has a name, contango, and for a fund that must roll every month it means habitually selling the cheaper contract and buying the dearer one. It is the difference between buying a flat and renewing a short lease every month at whatever the new rent is. Add BITO's 0.95% fee - roughly four times a spot fund's - and the drag compounds.

What neither of them gives you

Keys. An ETF share is an entry at your broker; you cannot withdraw bitcoin from it, spend it, or move it to a wallet. That is the trade: no seed phrase to lose, but no coins to hold either. Buying through an exchange and moving the coins to MetaMask or a Ledger device is the other road, with its own homework.

If you are comparing funds, pull up each one's fact sheet and look at two lines - what it holds and what it charges - rather than a week of chart. Why the futures structure bites hardest over years is the subject of why BITO underperforms bitcoin, and the spot funds are set side by side in IBIT vs FBTC.
