Add a Payment Method: Troubleshooting Cards and Bank Accounts

Failing to add a payment method is not the same as a declined purchase. Here the platform is only trying to confirm that the card or account is real, is yours, and is allowed to be used. If that check fails, the method never appears in your list at all. Almost every cause falls into one of four groups, and each has a different fix.
Why a card will not link
The usual reasons, roughly in order of how often they happen:
- The card is not enrolled in 3-D Secure, the one-time code or in-app approval step. Platforms require it, and a card without it simply cannot be added.
- The card type is not supported. Prepaid, reloadable, gift, secured and business cards are rejected by most crypto platforms outright.
- Your bank blocks crypto merchants. The card works everywhere else and still fails here.
- The card is already linked to another account on the same platform. One card, one account.
- The name on the card does not match the name on your verified profile. Platforms will not accept a third party's card, even a partner's.
Why a bank account will not link
Instant verification uses a third-party service to log into your bank, and not every bank - especially smaller online-only ones - is supported. When instant linking is unavailable, the fallback is micro-deposits: the platform sends two tiny amounts, you read them off your statement and type them back. That takes a day or two. Some banks also keep an allow-list of outgoing payees, and the exchange has to be added to it before anything will go through.
Check these before you blame the card
Identity verification has to be finished first - most platforms will not let you attach any funding method until it is. The country on your profile has to be the country you actually live in now, and a stale address breaks the match. If you recently moved, fix the profile before trying again.
If it still refuses, phone your bank and ask the specific question: does this card allow cryptocurrency purchases, and is 3-D Secure switched on. A support agent can answer both in a minute, and that one call resolves most cases. Why a card does not work to buy crypto covers the bank-side blocks in detail, and the full reasons-and-fixes list covers what happens once the card is linked.
