Injective Makes BDACS's KRW1 Its Only Won Settlement Asset

Injective Makes BDACS's KRW1 Its Only Won Settlement Asset

Tokenized assets priced in Korean won will settle in one stablecoin on Injective, and only that one. The layer-1 network signed a memorandum of understanding with BDACS, a registered South Korean virtual asset service provider, naming the custodian's KRW1 the exclusive won-denominated settlement asset for real-world asset activity on the chain. Both sides put it out on Tuesday 20 October. Minting and redemption stay with approved institutional partners, and the arrangement is subject to South Korean regulatory approval. The aim is to let a Korean institution trade a tokenized asset in won without routing through a dollar stablecoin first.

The money leaving by the dollar door

Dollar-pegged coins are over 98% of stablecoin market capitalisation, a share both accounts of the deal carry. That share has a Korean consequence. The two companies supplied the figure for it themselves. The country's five largest exchanges have recorded 18 consecutive months of net stablecoin outflows to overseas platforms, about $10.4 billion in all. No outlet read here checked that tally against its own data. Harry Ryoo, the chief executive of BDACS, put the case for a local rail in one line.

"Without onchain won infrastructure, demand in tokenized markets will remain anchored to dollar stablecoins," Ryoo said.

The central bank has made a version of the same argument from the other side, linking dollar stablecoin demand to weaker currencies. A separate estimate put the domestic prize at up to $3.8 billion a year in merchant fees.

Who holds the won behind the token

Here the accounts part company. Injective's own post says KRW1's reserves sit at "a major Korean bank" and stops there. Crypto Briefing names Woori Bank, holding all of the collateral in escrow, and adds that reserves are checked through banking APIs in real time instead of quarterly attestations. No second outlet read here confirms either. The same account traces KRW1 to a proof of concept on Avalanche that concluded on 18 September 2025, and says the token has since reached Ethereum and BNB Chain using LayerZero's cross-chain transfer standard. It also gives two size figures that do not reconcile: on-chain supply of about 13.67 million on Tuesday, against earlier reports of roughly 142 million won equivalent in total holdings. The account does not reconcile them, and we could not do it from the material at hand.

What each side brings

BDACS reported more than 80 billion won of assets under custody in the first half of 2026, a figure carried identically by both accounts. Injective's side of the ledger is volume. The network says it has processed over $7.5 billion in real-world asset trading, with more than $1 billion of tokenized assets issued, which one account credits to DefiLlama data. POSCO International and LG CNS have already picked the chain for trade receivables tied to international commerce. Neither company has said what won-settled volume it expects, and no date has been given for a first trade.

The bill that has to land first

None of this is cleared yet. South Korea's Digital Asset Basic Act would set the framework for won-denominated stablecoins, and both accounts describe it as in the final stages of government consultation, with parliamentary discussion expected next month. Whether the draft as written would permit KRW1's current structure is not addressed in any account read here. Until that law lands, KRW1 can be minted and redeemed only by counterparties BDACS has approved, which keeps an exclusive settlement designation narrow in practice. Injective called the agreement a first step to native won markets on the chain. The step after it depends on a text nobody outside the consultation has seen.
