Chip-Stock Perps Lose $51.6M in Ten Minutes With Wall Street Shut

Chip-Stock Perps Lose $51.6M in Ten Minutes With Wall Street Shut

Leveraged bets on semiconductor shares were closed out in bulk over a ten-minute stretch this weekend, on crypto venues that kept trading after US equity markets had shut. CoinGlass data, relayed by four outlets, puts the total at about $51.6 million across contracts tracking chip stocks and semiconductor funds. Roughly $38 million of that sat on the long side. Nothing was hacked, and no venue has reported a fault. The contracts had no live share price to follow, and the published accounts do not agree on when the ten minutes ran.

Four accounts, two clocks

CoinDesk, filing at 07:13 UTC on Sunday, dates the window to 21:22 to 21:32 UTC on Saturday 17 October. TokenPost gives that window in both New York time and UTC, and Blockonomi repeats it. Crypto Briefing, publishing four minutes after CoinDesk, puts the same cascade at 05:22 to 05:32 UTC on Sunday 18 October. All four attribute their figures to CoinGlass. None addresses another's timing, and they do not reconcile. Three readings against one is not a correction, and we could not establish which clock the tally was drawn against.

The ticker split is the part every account tells the same way

Crypto Briefing carries the fullest breakdown. SOXL, a fund built to triple the daily move in chip shares, led at about $12.73 million. SanDisk contracts lost about $10.85 million, and SK Hynix contracts about $10.72 million across two tickers. SOXS, built to move the other way, took about $9.07 million, and Micron about $4.40 million. Longs were 73.8% of the total on that count. CoinDesk's rounder figures sit inside the same shape, and Blockonomi puts the top three together at about $34.3 million.

No share price to anchor the contracts

A perpetual future is a derivative with no expiry date, held near the price of what it tracks by funding payments passed between the long and short sides. These ones track listed shares while margin and settlement stay in crypto, and they run around the clock. US equity markets were closed, so there was no quote for them to track and traders were reacting only to each other. Trade XYZ's rules let trading on its platform set its own reference prices until outside stock quotes come back. A venue that values positions against a price it writes itself inherits whatever the weekend does to that price. The reverse case has its own record here, when a single Seoul print carried straight into an SK Hynix perpetual in July and took the mark down 18.7%.

Who sold first, on one account

Only CoinDesk has the sequence, and it comes from a participant. David Jeong, chief executive of the trading firm Tread.fi, reviewed the trades for the outlet and said the selling started on Binance, where he placed the first large SanDisk and Micron sell orders at 21:21:59 UTC. Orders reached Hyperliquid less than a second later, where Trade XYZ lists the stock-tracking contracts. About ten addresses opened positions against six chip-linked contracts within 1.8 seconds. TokenPost carries that detail and calls them shorts; CoinDesk describes them only as bets against the contracts, so the direction stands unsettled. Binance handled about $21.9 million of SanDisk trading in the first minute, against $3.1 million on Trade XYZ. Crypto Briefing says no single catalyst was identified in immediate reports.

Monday is the measurement

Chip shares had a hard week before any of this, on competition worries about the Chinese memory maker CXMT, and the session that took bitcoin under $81,000 and back over $83,000 turned on the same names. Blockonomi puts the run at eight straight falling sessions and calls it the worst since 2008. The eight-day count also appears in BeInCrypto's reporting; the 2008 ranking rests on Blockonomi alone. Outside quotes return when US markets reopen on Monday. Until they do, nothing published settles how far the weekend marks sat from where these shares will actually open.
