LayerZero Ends Offchain Service for 13 Chains on 30 September

LayerZero stops carrying messages for thirteen more blockchains on Wednesday. The network's support page, revised on 25 September, sets 30 September as the day its offchain DVN and Executor services stop covering Aurora, Taiko, Japan Open Chain, LightLink, Viction, Anime, XPLA, Merlin, Gnosis, Zora, Xai, opBNB and Otherworld Space. A DVN, or decentralized verifier network, is the offchain service that attests a cross-chain message is genuine, and an Executor delivers that message on the destination chain. Pull both and a LayerZero route into one of those chains stops. Holders of bridged assets on them have four days.

Thirteen names, one deadline

The list itself is not in dispute. PANews and Phemex News both filed at 02:09 on 26 September, Coin Gabbar later the same day, and all three carry the same thirteen chains against the same date. All three match the page LayerZero publishes. The only variation is spelling, with Coin Gabbar writing Animechain where the primary writes Anime. What the page asks of users is narrower than the chain list suggests: redeem or bridge out Stargate Hydra positions, named as USDC.e, wETH and Hydra USDT, and move them somewhere that keeps support. It points at Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base and BSC as the destinations with deeper liquidity.

"Failure to act before chain support is fully deprecated will result in losing access to your funds," the support page said.

Stargate's clock ran a week ahead

Four of the thirteen were cut off earlier. LayerZero's Stargate table gives 23 September as the date Stargate v2 stopped supporting Aurora, Taiko, LightLink and Gnosis, and PANews reports the same four against the same date. Coin Gabbar has it differently. Its account says those four lose DVN, Executor and Stargate v2 together, with 30 September the single deadline for all of it. The two readings do not reconcile. This desk follows the primary, which puts anyone who left Stargate assets on those four chains past a deadline before the weekend coverage even began.

The page has been rewritten three times

What began in July has grown by revision. The support update is dated 24 July and carries notices of changes made on 21 August, 9 September and 25 September, the last of which is what put the story back in front of readers. Six waves now sit on it: Botanix on 30 July; Moonriver, Moonbeam, Nexera and Canto on 31 July; fifteen chains including Arbitrum Nova, Cronos zkEVM, Degen and BounceBit on 28 August; Harmony and Superposition on 8 September; the thirteen on 30 September; and five more in October. Counting the names gives 40 chains. That is our arithmetic on the page, not a figure LayerZero states.

Published totals are worse. AMBCrypto headlined 14 chains in August and described a July flag covering more than 30. A PANews post in July said 20. September's accounts count 13 and give no running total at all. Some of those are single waves and some are projections, and no account says which. They do not reconcile, so the per-wave figures are the only ones used here.

October's five, and what nobody has counted

Gravity, Camp, Lisk, GOAT and Metis are next. Their offchain service ends on 30 October, with Stargate support ending a week earlier on 23 October, on the primary page and on PANews. Nothing past that date is scheduled.

The wind-down arrives in a hard year for the company. Evercrest, the operator behind the Kelp restaking protocol, sued LayerZero in Vancouver this week over 116,500 rsETH, about $292 million, taken through a bridge in April. LayerZero's stated reason for the deprecations is minimal activity, and it has drawn no connection between the two. Chains closing themselves is a separate current in the same water, and ZetaChain's holders voted this month to retire their Layer 1 and move ZETA to Solana. What nobody has published is how much value still sits on the thirteen. Wednesday will show it.
