Toyota has increased the size of its Highlander SUV. The new model boasts more space in the cabin for passengers in the third row and an expanded cargo area.
Most of the additional volume is aimed at increasing the roominess of the third row and the trunk. The Grand Highlander offers approximately 6 inches of extra legroom in the third row compared to the standard Highlander’s 28 inches. Additionally, there is more head and shoulder room, and the cargo area can fit seven small suitcases without folding the seats. When the seats are folded, the trunk space expands to 98 cubic feet.
All three rows are equipped with storage compartments for phones or tablets, along with USB-C charging ports. In total, there are seven USB ports and 13 cup holders scattered throughout the cabin.
Buyers will be able to choose from three engine options for the Grand Highlander, available with either front- or all-wheel drive: a base 2.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and a 2.5-liter hybrid option. Topping the lineup is the Toyota Hybrid Max, which combines a 2.4-liter turbocharged internal combustion engine with two electric motors, delivering a total of 362 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is standard on Max models, which also offer a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 6.3 seconds and a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.
At the front, the Grand Highlander is equipped with a standard 12.3-inch display on the dashboard—the same system previously seen in the new Tundra and regular Highlander. The dashboard features Toyota’s standard set of functions, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander will be offered in XLE, Limited, and Platinum trims, with the standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 package and a new Proactive Driving Assist system, which supports braking or steering to help drivers navigate curves while enhancing the standard adaptive cruise control. Pricing, detailed specifications, and the release date will be announced later this year.
