GM Unveils $30,000 Electric SUV

General Motors has introduced a new electric SUV expected to be the most affordable compact electric SUV on the market, with sales anticipated to begin in about a year. The starting price for the Chevrolet Equinox EV will be around $30,000, making it one of the most affordable electric vehicles available.

Currently, the average base price for an electric vehicle is about $47,500. The Equinox EV, priced at $30,000, will be offered in a basic configuration without additional features.

Unlike most electric vehicles, the Equinox EV does not have a front trunk; instead, the front area under the hood houses electronic components and a front motor. GM designers and engineers saved costs by simplifying the front space and, as GM Vice President Scott Bell noted, redirected those resources into enhancing the vehicle’s interior.

The Equinox EV will be available with a two-tone body, a trend in the industry for several years. Customers purchasing the sporty RT models can choose a body color with a black roof, while those opting for the standard LT models can select a contrasting white roof.

The most affordable version, the Blazer 1LT, will have a single 210-horsepower motor and front-wheel drive, with a total range of about 250 miles on a full charge. The Equinox EV 1LT with all-wheel drive will offer an extended range of up to 300 miles, and this version is expected to be priced higher. The all-wheel-drive model with two electric motors will deliver up to 290 horsepower.

More equipped versions, the 2LT and the sportier RS, will offer either a 300-mile range or all-wheel drive with a range of up to 280 miles. Unlike the more expensive Blazer EV, the Equinox EV will be available only in all-wheel or front-wheel drive configurations.
