Apple has decided to update its AirTag trackers to fix an issue that triggered alerts about unknown accessories. Many users had complained, believing these alerts indicated that they were being tracked through the AirTag. Now, instead of showing a notification about an unknown accessory, the alert will indicate the presence of AirTag headphones.
The update, which will roll out sometime in 2022, will feature modified alert text. Users will be notified of the AirTag’s connection to an Apple ID and the prohibition of tracking. If tracking continues to occur, authorities may take an interest in the owner of the tag and gather information about them.
Once the updates are implemented, recipients of notifications will be able to determine the exact location of an unfamiliar AirTag. The owner of the tracker will also be able to locate it. Additionally, notifications will include a loud sound alert. The signal will play after detecting an AirTag nearby, even in a noisy room. A broken speaker will not affect the volume of the alert.
The company’s developers are reviewing the feedback they receive and improving the functionality of AirTags based on it. Apple assures that it is doing everything possible to protect users from unauthorized tracking and guarantees their privacy.
According to data released by the Canadian police in late 2021, AirTag trackers have been successfully used to commit crimes—criminals have used them to track and then steal high-end vehicles. In addition, AirTags have been used in other illegal activities.
