Antitrust authorities have imposed a €5 million fine on Apple for failing to provide alternative payment methods in the App Store.
The company was required to implement alternative payment options by January 15. The Dutch antitrust authorities reported that the company did not fulfill its obligations, as stated by representatives of the regulator, according to Reuters.
The Dutch antitrust authorities also informed that they would impose weekly fines on Apple ranging from €5 to €50 million until the company complies with the requirements.
In October 2021, the Dutch antitrust authorities recognized Apple as a monopoly and issued a demand for changes to the company’s payment policy. The regulator set the deadline for January 15, 2022. Apple agreed to comply with the orders but disagreed with the decision and announced its intention to appeal. In January, Apple announced that two alternative payment methods would be implemented in dating apps in the Netherlands. However, timely changes were not made to the company’s payment policy, resulting in the fine.
