HSBC Tests AI-Agent Micropayments on Its Tokenized Deposit Rails

HSBC Tests AI-Agent Micropayments on Its Tokenized Deposit Rails

Ant Digital Technologies and HSBC said on Friday that they had run software agents through a full payment cycle on bank money held as blockchain tokens. In the test, agents acting for a user found a digital service, paid for it and settled the payment in real time, with no person in the loop at any step. The sums were small by design: the announcement defines a micropayment as one that is often under $2. Settlement ran on Jovay Testnet, a layer-2 test environment, which means nothing moved on a live network. Both companies were explicit that this was a technical exercise and not a product anyone can buy.

Which side did what

HSBC supplied its Tokenised Deposit Service, the system that holds a corporate deposit as a token backed one-for-one by the deposit itself, and ran risk checks on each payment as it happened. Those checks reached the agents through an MCP interface, the convention that lets an AI model call outside tools and data. Ant's side was Anvita Flow, a network that lets agents discover a service and invoke it, and which handled the settlement instructions. The release does not name the digital service the agent bought, and it does not give the amount actually paid.

Agent-initiated bank payments are not new ground. Santander completed one in March using Mastercard's Agent Pay, in a controlled test wired into live payment systems. Sygnum ran agent-driven transactions on a blockchain mainnet in May, with customers approving and signing each one. CaixaBank put an agent through a card transaction on Visa's Intelligent Commerce and ordinary merchant plumbing. What Friday's test adds is the funding leg, with tokenized deposits rather than a card or a stablecoin standing behind the payment.

"This technical verification with HSBC demonstrates the potential use of on-chain AI agents," said Zhuoqun Bian, president of blockchain business at Ant Digital Technologies.

Three days earlier, the same rails in the UAE

The agent test was the second HSBC tokenised-deposit announcement of the week, and the two came from different parts of Ant. On 6 October, Ant International said it had completed real-time transfers denominated in UAE dirhams inside the country, plus dollar transfers out of the UAE to markets including Hong Kong and Singapore. Those ran on live rails, not a testnet. Ant's own treasury platform, WhaleRTP, started the transactions and HSBC's service executed them; the two firms designed the workflow together. Ant is the first client in the Middle East on that service, and says it wants a global treasury hub in the region.

The 6 October release is not internally consistent. It describes the pilots as covering two payment corridors connecting the UAE and Hong Kong, then lists Singapore among the destinations for the dollar leg. Both statements sit in the same document and they do not reconcile. The service is live in six markets, by that release's count, and handles seven currencies including the dirham.

What neither announcement settles

No volumes, values or customer counts were given for either leg, and no date exists for a commercial version of the agent capability. The scope line in Friday's release rules that reading out for now, calling the work an exploration of the technology. The two announcements also share nothing beyond HSBC's rails and the Ant Group name, since Ant International and Ant Digital Technologies are separate units with separate platforms; we could not establish any sequencing between the two. What is testable next is whether the agent flow survives a move off the testnet, where a failed risk check costs real money.
