Circle Puts USDC on Chelsea's Shirt in a Premier League First

30 Aug 2026by CryptoJazz Admin1 min read6 views

Chelsea is due to play its first home league game of the season with a stablecoin on the front of the shirt. Circle, which issues USDC, was announced on Friday as the club's principal partner and official front-of-shirt sponsor from the 2026/27 season, with the branding going on men's, women's and academy kits. Neither side put a figure on it. Three different figures have been reported anyway. It is the first time a crypto financial-services firm has held the principal shirt position at a Premier League club.

Three estimates and no disclosure

CoinDesk, writing on Friday, cites earlier reporting that Chelsea had been asking Β£65 million a year, about $88.3 million, for the slot. Reuters carried $88 million as what the deal is reportedly worth. That is the same number doing different work, because an asking price and a settled fee are not the same claim, and neither outlet says which this is. Coinotag and BeInCrypto both put the deal close to Β£50 million a season. The industry tracker The Sponsor values the Chelsea shirt itself at Β£33.6 million, down Β£16.7 million on an earlier reading, blaming the absence of European football; that valuation sits in one account. Chelsea's own position, as BeInCrypto reports it, is that the Circle deal is at the market rate.

Three years or four

How long the shirt went blank depends on who is counting. CoinDesk and Reuters say three years. BeInCrypto and Coinotag say four, dating it to the phone network Three UK leaving in 2023. BeInCrypto also records interim arrangements with Infinite Athlete and Damac inside that stretch, which would shorten the genuinely empty period and may be the whole of the difference. Neither count is sourced to the club. The debut date has the same trouble. Circle's own press release says the shirt is first worn on 31 August, while CoinDesk, Cryptopolitan, BeInCrypto and Coinotag all say Sunday against Brighton and Hove Albion, and Reuters says 30 August. Sunday is 30 August. The primary source is the one out of step.

The licence is the point

What separates this from the sponsorships the regulator has been complaining about is an authorisation. Circle holds an e-money issuer licence from Britain's Financial Conduct Authority, which CoinDesk dates to 2016, and BeInCrypto notes a separate French e-money licence taken out in July 2024 under the European Union's MiCA rules. Those are different permissions in different jurisdictions. Neither makes USDC a regulated stablecoin in the UK, where the cryptoasset regime does not start until 2027. The FCA warned Premier League clubs in June to weigh financial-crime and reputational risk before taking money from unauthorised crypto firms. One account gives the wording.

"Clubs should not let unauthorised financial firms exploit that loyalty," the FCA said in June, in a rendering carried by BeInCrypto alone.

What the shirt is selling

USDC is the second-largest stablecoin and the sixth-largest crypto asset. The circulation figures cluster without matching. Coinotag and BeInCrypto give $73.6 billion, Cryptopolitan gives $73.3 billion, and The Block puts USDC at 25.3% of a $292.2 billion dollar-stablecoin market, which works out near $73.9 billion. Different snapshot times are the likeliest explanation and none of the three states one. Cryptopolitan adds circulation up 19% on the year and $14.8 trillion of transaction volume in the quarter. Circle's shares have gone the other way. CRCL traded at $92.14 on Friday, down about 30% over twelve months, by the figure Reuters carried.

Jeremy Allaire, Circle's co-founder and chief executive, framed the deal around reach into a global sports audience, and Jason Gannon, the club's president, said it puts Chelsea "at the forefront of football's digital evolution." What neither side has said is how long the arrangement runs, whether it carries performance or termination clauses, or whether Circle pays in the token it issues. Crypto money left English football in bulk three years ago, and what survived sat on the sleeve: OKX at Manchester City, Kraken at Tottenham Hotspur. The chest is a step up from that. USDC goes on it a full season before Britain's stablecoin rules take effect.
