Bitcoin's Five-Week Coma: Volumes at Three-Year Lows

Bitcoin's Five-Week Coma: Volumes at Three-Year Lows

Bitcoin traded at $64,316.33 on Tuesday, up 0.32% over 24 hours after an early slide toward $63,500. The move was small. That is the story. The coin has now spent five straight weeks inside a band between $62,000 and $66,000, trading volumes are at three-year lows, and implied volatility, the options market's gauge of expected swings, sits at multiyear lows, per CoinDesk's Tuesday coverage. It was a ten-week low in early August; it has ground lower since. Desks describe derivatives positioning as well-hedged, and nobody is leaning on either side of the market.

Two flows canceling out

The traders CoinDesk quoted on Tuesday described an equilibrium. Money keeps arriving through the spot ETFs. A comparable amount of supply keeps meeting it over the counter, away from exchange order books, so the price goes nowhere.

"Bitcoin's recent price action has largely been driven by steady ETF inflows being offset by OTC selling from miners and Strategy (MSTR)," said Paul Howard of trading firm Wincent.

The Strategy half of that sentence is not a guess. The company disclosed on Monday that it had sold another 1,690 BTC at an average of $64,262 in the first week of August, its third sale of the summer, with proceeds routed to a dollar reserve. Miners are the other steady seller. Jeff Anderson of STS Digital summed up the tape: "Conviction is thin on both sides as summer illiquidity reigns supreme."

The flow numbers do not quite agree

Checking the inflow half of the equation turns up a conflict. FinanceFeeds reported that spot bitcoin ETFs shed $144 million on Monday, ending a five-day streak it sized at $853.5 million for the week of 3-7 August. Two other weekly tallies for the same funds ran at roughly $850.4 million and $754 million. The three totals do not reconcile, and we could not establish which tracker supersedes the others. CoinDesk's Tuesday framing, meanwhile, still had inflows offsetting the selling, which sits awkwardly beside a $144 million single-day outflow. On two points every tally agrees. The week of 3-7 August was the funds' best since early May. Monday broke the run.

Wednesday is the test

The catalyst every desk named is Wednesday morning's July CPI release, the one scheduled event this week that CoinDesk flagged as capable of forcing a move. A market this compressed and this hedged behaves like a spring: whichever way the inflation number surprises, it will land on order books thinner than they have been in three years. That cuts both ways, and the well-hedged positioning suggests traders are paying for protection against either outcome instead of betting on one.

Behind the print sits the calendar. September has been bitcoin's weakest month, averaging a 4% decline since 2013, so a market that does not move in August walks into historically hostile seasonality anyway. None of this guarantees motion. Five weeks of history argue the band holds until something breaks it, and as of Tuesday evening in New York nothing had. The inflation figure lands Wednesday morning, and it is the first number in a month that the market has actively positioned around. Whether it wakes the tape or joins the long list of events this range has absorbed is the only open question that settles within a day.
