What Is Leverage in Crypto Trading? Borrowed Size, Explained

Leverage in crypto trading means borrowing from the exchange so your position is larger than your own money. Put up $100 at 10x and you control $1,000 worth of bitcoin: every 1% move now changes your balance by 10%, in whichever direction it goes. Nothing about the coin changes - only the size of your exposure, and the speed at which the deposit can disappear.

How does the borrowing actually work?

Much like buying a house with a deposit. Your $100 is the deposit, the exchange lends the rest, and the position itself is the collateral for that loan. Because the lender wants its money back, it watches the trade constantly and closes it automatically the moment your deposit is nearly used up. That forced closure is called liquidation, and on a 10x position it arrives after roughly a 10% move against you - sooner, once fees and funding costs are counted.

What does 10x really mean for the risk?

It means the market has ten times less room to be wrong before you are out. Bitcoin moving 5% in a day is ordinary; at 20x that ordinary day ends the position. This is why beginners lose money so quickly on perpetual futures: they size the trade by how much they would like to make, rather than by how far price might wander on a normal Tuesday. The higher the multiple, the more the trade depends on precise timing instead of on being right.

Is it ever used sensibly?

Yes, usually at numbers that look boring. Experienced traders often sit at two or three times, with a stop placed where the idea is genuinely wrong, so a loss is a small slice of the account rather than all of it. The same mechanism exists in lending apps such as Aave, where borrowing against coins you already hold creates leverage by another route - and the same forced sale waits if the collateral falls too far.

If you want to learn this, learn it at 2x on a small account, with the stop set before you enter. Leave the 50x and 100x buttons alone while you are starting out; they are the fastest way to turn a reasonable opinion into a liquidation. Next: how margin trading works and whether your balance can go negative.
