What Does Rekt Mean in Crypto?

Rekt is a deliberate misspelling of wrecked, and it means a loss large enough to finish you rather than dent you. Being down is not being rekt. Rekt is the position closed automatically, the exchange that stopped paying out, the coin that went to zero overnight. It is said half as sympathy and half as a joke, usually by people it has happened to.
Where does the word come from?
From online games, where "get rekt" has been shouted at losing players for two decades. Crypto traders borrowed it around 2015, and the derivatives exchange BitMEX made it a fixture with a public feed of forced closures that anyone could watch scroll past. The industry's best-known catalogue of disasters, the site rekt.news, took its name from the same joke.
What actually gets people rekt?
Mostly borrowed money. Traders can put down 100 dollars and control 1,000, which sounds like a shortcut and is really a shortened fuse: a 10 percent move against you now erases everything, and the exchange closes the position without asking. The tighter the leverage, the smaller the move that ends it. But there are two other routes, and neither involves trading at all:
- A project failing. The Terra system collapsed in May 2022, and a coin many people treated as a safe dollar substitute lost almost all its value in under a week.
- A company failing. When the exchange FTX went under in November 2022, customers who had done nothing riskier than leaving coins in their account could not withdraw them.
What keeps people out of it?
Three unglamorous habits, in order of importance. Do not borrow to trade β most people who get rekt were leveraged. Keep coins you are not actively using in a wallet you control rather than on an exchange, so another company's collapse is not your problem. And size positions so that a total loss on any one of them is survivable.
If you take one thing from the word, take this: getting rekt is almost never about picking the wrong coin. It is about position size, borrowed money and where the coins sit. Those three are entirely in your hands, and unlike a market crash, they do not require anyone else's cooperation to get right.
