Order Blocks and Breaker Blocks of the Smart Money Concept

Order Blocks and Breaker Blocks of the Smart Money Concept

Order blocks and breaker blocks are the same zone at two different moments of its life. An order block is a box traders expect price to respect. A breaker block is that same box after price smashed straight through it - and SMC traders then watch it from the other side, as a level that may now push price away rather than hold it up.

How does an order block become a breaker?

By failing. Say Bitcoin leaves a bullish order block on the way up; later price falls back, cuts clean through the box and closes well below it. The traders who bought in that zone are now sitting on losses. Many of them will take the first chance to get out at break-even, so if price climbs back to the same area there is a crowd of sellers waiting. The level has flipped: what people were leaning on has become something they are leaning against.

Is a breaker any better than a fresh block?

It is a different kind of evidence. A fresh order block is an assumption about what large buyers did; a breaker has a visible event behind it - the market already came here and went the other way. That makes it easier to reason about, but it also means you are trading with the trend that broke the level rather than against it, which is usually the calmer side to be on. Neither is a signal by itself, and both fail regularly.

Reading the two on one chart

The practical difference is which way you face. At an untouched bullish order block you are looking for price to turn up; at the breaker left behind after it failed, you are looking for the bounce to stall. Marking both, in two colours, keeps you honest - the chart then shows you where your own idea stopped being true instead of letting you argue with it.

Go back over any ETH or Bitcoin chart from the past month, find a zone that broke, and see what happened the first time price returned to it. Start with what order blocks are if the basics are still fuzzy, and the anatomy of a valid order block for the checks that come first.
