Forgot Your MetaMask Password? How to Reset or Recover It

If you forgot your MetaMask password, nobody can reset it for you. There is no support desk, no email link, no security question. The password is not an account login — it only unlocks the encrypted copy of your wallet stored in that one browser or that one phone. The way back in is your Secret Recovery Phrase: the 12 words you were shown at setup. With them, you are back in two minutes.

The normal fix, with the 12 words

On the unlock screen, choose "Forgot password" and then "Reset wallet". MetaMask asks for your Secret Recovery Phrase and a new password. This does not delete anything on the blockchain; it throws away the locked copy on your device and builds a fresh one from the words. Your addresses, balances and transaction history come straight back. Type the words into the extension or app only — every site that offers to "validate" or "sync" a phrase is a theft operation.

What if you do not have the phrase either?

Then your options narrow to one, and it has a deadline. If MetaMask is still unlocked anywhere — another browser profile, an old laptop, a phone where Face ID still lets you in — go there immediately and open Settings, then Security and Privacy, and reveal the Secret Recovery Phrase. Write it on paper. Do it before that session logs itself out or the browser data gets cleared.

If every copy is locked and the words are gone, be honest with yourself about the odds. The encrypted vault sitting in your browser folder can only be opened by the password, so the only real path is remembering it. Write down every variant you might have used and try them patiently. What does not work is paying a "recovery expert": the ones that advertise to victims are, with very few exceptions, the second robbery.

The habit that prevents all of this

Your password protects one device; your 12 words protect the wallet. Keep the words on paper in two separate places, and never in a screenshot, a notes app, or an email to yourself. If you are in the harder situation already, recovering a wallet without a seed phrase lists the few paths that exist, and if the words are refused when you type them, the invalid seed phrase error is usually a typo rather than a disaster.
