DBS and Citi Settle a Weekend Dollar Payment on Swift's Ledger

7 Sept 2026by CryptoJazz Admin1 min read2 views

A dollar payment moved from Singapore to New York on Saturday, on a day when correspondent banking is normally shut. DBS sent it and Citi received it, as tokenized deposits on Swift's Digital Ledger, and both banks say it settled in minutes. A conventional cross-border transfer can take up to two business days. Neither bank disclosed the amount. Five accounts of the transaction were published on Monday and not one of them carries a figure.

What a tokenized deposit does here

The money never leaves the banking system. A tokenized deposit is a claim on a commercial bank recorded on a shared ledger, so the transfer is a commitment made instantly between two institutions, with final settlement still running through real-time gross settlement afterwards. Citi described that split in its own announcement on 2 September. Swift, in July, called the ledger an orchestration layer for bank-issued deposits moving across borders around the clock, with settlement finishing through the systems already in place. The weekend is the whole point of the exercise. Nothing in either description makes the payment final at the moment it appears to arrive, and neither bank has said what the delay to final settlement was on Saturday.

The count of firsts does not add up

How much traffic this ledger has actually carried depends on who is counting. CoinDesk called Saturday's transfer the second confirmed live transaction on the platform, after HSBC and Standard Chartered in August. Citi's own release of 2 September says it had already run live transactions with First Abu Dhabi Bank in the Middle East and with OCBC in Southeast Asia, and describes itself as the first US bank to conduct live native ledger transactions there. Fintech Singapore, writing on Monday, places the DBS payment after those two. A count of two cannot hold if the FAB and OCBC transfers were live. The tallies do not reconcile. We could not establish which reading supersedes the other. The narrower claim is the one every account shares: this was the first run over a weekend.

Seventeen banks, two of them in the Gulf

Swift named the pilot group when the ledger became ready for use in July. It runs to 17 institutions across six continents, among them First Abu Dhabi Bank and Mashreq alongside ANZ, BNP Paribas, BNY, HSBC, Itau Unibanco, MUFG, UBS, UOB and Wells Fargo. A smaller group of 12 shapes the architecture, and DBS is the only Asian-headquartered member of it. One account describes the ledger as EVM-compatible and built on Hyperledger Besu, which no other outlet reviewed here confirms. The same account puts the pilot's run at July to December; Swift's July release names no end date at all.

"Processing a live transaction over a weekend demonstrates that always-on cross-border payments are already a reality," said Mridula Iyer, Citi's head of services for Asia South.

Where the pipeline goes next

Citi listed DBS and UOB in September as the next counterparties on the ledger, and half of that has now happened. Rachel Chew, group chief operating officer at DBS, said the bank was pleased to work with Citi to show tokenized money moving from experimentation to real-world adoption; DBS has run its own token services since 2024, and Citi added digital-asset custody when it launched Custody+ in August. A separate tokenized deposit network built by US banks through The Clearing House is due in the first half of 2027. CoinDesk cites a projection of $24 trillion in Asian outbound cross-border payments by 2033 against $13.5 trillion in 2025, without naming the study behind it, so the figure sits unverified. The number that would settle how serious Saturday was is the one nobody printed: what the payment was worth.
