Solana Cuts Slot Time to 350ms, Its First Reduction Since Genesis
Solana's target slot time is 350 milliseconds. The cut, carried by a proposal numbered SIMD-0525, is the first in the network's history, and it took effect in epoch 1020. Solana Compass and Genfinity both date that to 21 August; The Cryptonomist, writing two days later, names the epoch but no calendar date. The feature gate itself flipped earlier, at slot 440,208,000, the opening slot of epoch 1019, then waited an epoch before biting. Three more cuts of the same size are already written and staged behind their own gates.
Three more steps, each on its own vote
The ladder runs 350 milliseconds, then 300, then 250, then 200. Every rung needs a fresh supermajority of validators, carries the same one-epoch delay, and depends on the block skip rate staying healthy on the rung below. Skipped slots are the network's own warning light. Anza, the firm behind the Agave validator client, has the staged activations tentatively scheduled against version 4.2, and Solana Compass points to a public tracker for the sequence. Jacob Creech, vice president of technology at the Solana Foundation, marked the first rung on 21 August.
"Solana has officially reduced its slot time for the first time since its inception. We're in a new era of 350ms. Next stop, 300ms," Creech said.
The compute budget shrinks with the clock
Shorter slots hold less work, so the per-block compute ceiling steps down alongside them. Compute units are the meter Solana bills execution against. Solana Compass, Genfinity and CryptoSlate all give that ceiling as 100 million units before the change and 87.5 million after, which holds capacity at roughly 250 million units a second. crypto.news works from a 60 million baseline and arrives at 52.5 million. The two do not reconcile. This desk's own late-July reporting favours the higher pair, because Solana lifted the ceiling to 100 million units at epoch 1009; the lower figure reads like the pre-July number carried forward.
What else the shorter slot moves
An epoch still holds 432,000 slots, so it now completes in about 42 hours instead of 48. The leader window, the run of consecutive slots a single validator gets to produce, falls to 1.4 seconds from 1.6. The Cryptonomist timed a 1,000-slot stretch at 368 seconds after the change against 415 seconds before, which is the only measured comparison located. Solana's validator admission ticket is priced against the same clock under the Alpenglow design, 1.6 SOL an epoch at 400 milliseconds and 0.8 SOL at 200. Finality is untouched at about 12.8 seconds.
The bill arrives lower down the ladder
Genfinity is the only outlet located carrying the cost side, and it should be read as one account. More frequent votes and heavier gossip traffic press on validator hardware. Remote operators face handoff latencies of up to 122 milliseconds, half a slot at the 200-millisecond target. Validators not running Alpenglow would pay roughly double the vote transaction fees at that speed. The same piece quotes the proposal on the mechanism, "more frequent slots create more frequent votes, heavier gossip traffic, and higher processing demand per second," and names Brennan Watt, an engineer at Anza, as its author. Neither the risk list nor the attribution has a second source.
Measured behaviour is not yet at the target. crypto.news put the observed average near 360 milliseconds at the time of its report, ten above the new setting. Solana has also designated the reduction a breaking change for anyone indexing the chain, with the required adjustments still being worked out, according to The Cryptonomist. That, too, stands on one outlet. The next gate opens only when the skip rate says it can.
